Last year I found this purple and blue rotting fungus in Guildwood, Ontario Canada.
Now I believe this very interesting fungus is a Pulcherriciam caeruleum fungus.

Der Tigerritterling ist ein Giftpilz aus der Ordnung der Blätterpilze (Agaricales) und
Mykorrhiza-Pilz verschiedener Laub- und Nadelbäume, in erster Linie von Rotbuche, Weißtanne und Fichte. Das Myzel wächst in der Erde. Calvatia gigantea, commonly known as the Giant puffball, is a puffball mushroom commonly found in meadows, fields, and deciduous forests worldwide usually in late summer and autumn. It is common throughout Europe and North America.

All members of the true puffball family are considered edible when immature, but can cause digestive upset if the spores have matured.

Immature gilled species still contained within their universal veil can be look alikes for puffballs.

Der Riesenbovist oder Riesenstäubling (Langermannia gigantea) ist ein unverwechselbarer Wiesenpilz mit einem außerordentlich großen Fruchtkörper. Früher zählte man ihn zur Klasse oder Unterklasse der Bauchpilze (Gastromycetes bzw. Gastromycetidae), welche nach neueren wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen keine taxonomische Bedeutung mehr hat. Fomes fomentarius (Tinder Polypore) are bracket fungi up to 15 cm wide and resembles hooves that are as high as they are wide. Colors vary from light gray (as seen here) to browns to charcoal grays. A very common fungi, it is found on both standing and fallen deciduous logs. As with all bracket fungi, it is considered to be inedible.

Polypores include any non-mushroom-shaped fungus that produce its spores from pores, as opposed to gills or some other structure. Now these ex-Polyporuses have been parceled out into over 100 genera, Piptoporus being one, and further divided into several families.

I found very interesting Stemonitis - slime molds in our garden including
some orange poria.

Chocolate tube slime look like brown hairsgrowing on wood.
While not fungi, slime molds often
form spore-bearing structures that resemble those of thetrue fungi.
Although many slime mold species fruit on wood they do not form a penetrating
and absorptive mass of hyphae in the wood substrate.
In Stemonitis, the plasmodium converts into a clustered mass of stalked sporangia.

Xanthoria parietina is a foliose, or leafy lichen.
It has wide distribution, and many common names such as common orange lichen, yellow scale, maritime sunburst lichen and shore lichen. It can be found near the shore on rocks or walls (hence the epithet parietina meaning "on walls"), and also on inland rocks, walls, or tree bark. It was chosen as a model organism for genomic sequencing (planned in 2006) by the US Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute (JGI). In the past it was used as a remedy for jaundice because of its yellow color.

The species was first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1753, as Lichen parietinus.

Lichens on trees are a unique organism because they are actually a symbiotic relationship
between two organisms, fungus and algae.
The fungus grows on the tree and can collect moisture, which the alga needs.
The alga, in return, can create food from the energy of the sun, which feeds the fungus.
Lichen on tree bark is completely harmless to the tree itself.
The rhizines (similar to roots) allow them to attach to the but do not go deep
enough to harm the tree in any way.
Many people believe when a tree becomes sick and has lichen,
that the tree lichens are the cause of the illness.
This is impossible and most likely the lichen was there long before the tree became ill.
After the storm I collect broken twigs around the house.
Very often I discover interesting lichens.

Looks like an agaricus bisporus. Not sure about it, but who knows??

Versicolor means 'of several colours' and it is true that this mushroom is found in a wide variety of different colours. T. versicolor is commonly called Turkey Tail in the United States because of its resemblance to the tail of the wild turkey.
T. versicolor is recognized as a medicinal mushroom in Chinese medicine under the name yun zhi (simplified Chinese: 云芝, traditional Chinese: 雲芝). In China and Japan T. versicolor is used as in immunoadjuvant therapy for cancer.

The artist’s conk fungus commonly occurs throughout hardwood stands in southern Ontario, affecting a wide variety of hosts.
It is capable of causing decay in both living and dead trees.
The characteristic woody conks can live for five to 10 years, increasing in size annually by growing a new spore-producing layer. Conks measuring more than one meter in width are common. The upper surface of the conk is generally smooth, dark brown to gray, with a whitish leading edge. The undersurface is white, becoming yellowish with age. The interior of the conk is dark reddish-brown, soft, and corky. Conks develop abundantly on dead timber and less frequently on living trees.

Interesting wood decay on old tree.
Brown-rot fungi commonly cause decay in living trees, downed timber and wood used in buildings.
Since large losses of wood strength result from brown rot, living trees with this decay can be hazardous and wood in service may fail. Commonly, this type of decay has been referred to as dry rot.
This term, apparently first used to describe any deterioration of dead wood or wood
is misleading because moisture must be present for the decay to occur.

Conks - Cracked Cap Polypore

Conks, those shelf-like or hoof-shaped things that grow from the sides of trees, are also the fruiting bodies of a fungus.
First of all, conks don't have gills on the underside of the fruiting body; they have a layer of tubes.
Another thing that's different about polypores is that they usually last a long time. Ordinary mushrooms, like plant fruits, usually decay quickly.
Polypores, on the other hand, often remain on the tree for several months, and some of them remain basically indefinitely, adding a new layer of growth each year, the way a tree adds rings.

With this Fomes, you can see the layers of growth on the cap, and at the bottom where it's been cut away, you can see that there are layers of growth both in the upper shell and in the tube layer. Some large polypores have been found that have twenty or thirty layers!

The main body of the fungus - - the part that's digesting the substrate - - is called a mycelium, and the threads that make it up are called hyphae (HIGH-fee). The fruiting body of the fungus is also made up of hyphae: the "fibers" in the stem of a mushroom are made up of hyphae running in parallel to make the stem strong; the cap of the mushroom is made of of hyphae so tightly interwoven that they seem to be one solid mass; and even a hard conk is made up of hyphae that have been specially strengthened with material from the host tree, to make them hard and woody.

Polyporus squamosus is an edible basidiomycete bracket fungus, with common names including Dryad's saddle and Pheasant's back mushroom. The name "Dryad's saddle" refers to creatures in Greek mythology called Dryads who could conceivably fit and ride on this mushroom, whereas the pheasant's back analogy derives from the pattern of colours on the bracket matching that of a pheasant's back.
This mushroom is commonly attached to dead logs or stumps at one point with a thick stem. Generally, the fruiting body is 8–30 cm (3–12 in) across and up to 10 cm (4 in) thick.
The body can be yellow to brown and has "squamules" or scales on its upper side. On the underside one can see the pores that are characteristic of the genus Polyporus, which will produce a white spore print if laid onto a sheet of paper. They can be found alone, in clusters of two or three, or forming shelves. Young specimens are soft but toughen with age. It is particularly common on dead elm and is also found on living maple trees.

Der Schuppige Porling, Schuppige Stielporling oder auch Schwarzfußporling (Polyporus squamosus ist ein relativ großer Pilz aus der Gattung der Porlinge. Der deutsche Name Schuppiger Porling ist eine wörtliche Übersetzung der wissenschaftlichen Bezeichnung. Polyporus bedeutet Porling (eigentlich Vielporer) und squamosus kommt auch aus dem Lateinischen und heißt vielschuppig. Der zweite gebräuchliche volkstümliche Name Schwarzfußporling bezieht sich auf den schwarz gefärbten Stielbereich an der Basis.
Der Pilz kommt auf Stämmen von abgestorbenen oder stark geschwächten Laubbäumen vor und verursacht eine Weißfäule, d. h. er baut im Holz bevorzugt das Lignin ab. Markant ist sein Auftreten im Verbindung mit einem sehr raschen Wachstum im Mai und Juni, er kann seltener auch zu anderen Zeiten von April bis September erscheinen.

This patch of moss grows in our garden between rocks!!

Mosses are small, soft plants that are typically 1–10 cm (0.4-4 in) tall, though some species are much larger. They commonly grow close together in clumps or mats in damp or shady locations. They do not have flowers or seeds, and their simple leaves cover the thin wiry stems. At certain times mosses produce spore capsules which may appear as beak-like capsules borne aloft on thin stalks.

The mosses are grouped as a single division, now named Bryophyta, and divided into six classes:

Takakiopsida
Sphagnopsida
Andreaeopsida
Andreaeobryopsida
Polytrichopsida
Bryopsida

There are approximately 12,000 species of moss classified in the Bryophyta alone. The division Bryophyta formerly included not only mosses, but also liverworts and hornworts. These other two groups of bryophytes now are often placed in their own divisions.

Fomes fomentarius - Tinder Polypore on birch tree bark

Great find after the storm:
Tinder Polypore, Fomes fomentarius still attached to birch bark.

The pictures show the details of this shelf like Mushroom.
What is interesting is how the Tinder Polypore attaches itself to the tree.
There is no stem just a stalkless cap with brown pores.
This common, hoof shaped conk is known in Europe as "Amadou"
and has been used for quick ignition of fires.

Ötzi the Iceman

is the modern nickname of a well-preserved natural mummy of a man from about 3300 BC, found in 1991 in a glacier of the Otztal Alps, near the border between Austria and Italy. The nickname comes from the valley of discovery. He rivals the Egyptian "Ginger" as the oldest known human mummy, and has offered an unprecedented view on the habits of Chalcolithic (Copper Age) Europeans.
Among Ötzi's possessions were two species of polypore mushrooms. One of these (the birch fungus) is known to have antibacterial properties, and was likely used for medical purposes. The other was a type of tinder fungus, included with part of what appeared to be a complex firestarting kit. The kit featured pieces of over a dozen different plants, in addition to flint and pyrite for creating sparks.

Found this small Maple leaf branch covered with a white fungi in the woods.
Couldn't resist to take it home and placed it in our front yard.
My husband got used to find unusual items in our garden.
Besides searching and taking pictures of fungi,
I love to collect rocks and fossils as well.

Most of these are "polypores" in the widely used sense of the word: they are wood decomposers whose spores are held in tubes. Many lack fully developed stems, and grow shelf-like or crust-like on wood, while some have more or less central stems and grow at the bases of trees.

Polypores are a group of tough, leathery poroid mushrooms similar to boletes, but typically lacking a distinct stalk.
The technical distinction between the two types of mushrooms is that polypores do not have the spore-bearing tissue continuous along the entire underside of the mushroom. Many polypores are bracket fungi.
The polypore growth form exists in many different evolutionary lines of higher basidiomycetes.
Although many polypore species are members of the Polyporales, there are many polypores that belong to other groups as well.
Polypores are often found on rotting logs, and are rot-resistant to the extent
that they themselves often last long enough to have moss growing on them.

it is covered with detachable long and short spines.
It develops a pore in the center and has white flesh that becomes greenish-brown with age.

Though the "spines" are very soft, the base that is attached to the tree is very tough,
and needs to be cut off with a knife.They grow well in the wild throughout North America.

Piptoporus betulinus on dead birch trees and logs, or occasionally on living trees.
The species is an attractive polypore, easily recognized by its habitat on birch wood and the fact that the cap folds over
to make a distinctive, smooth rim around the pore surface.
The caps are whitish to brownish, and the pore surface is whitish or grayish brown.
Although Piptoporus betulinus is annual and does not actually live for more than one season,
its fruiting bodies are somewhat tough and are sometimes found in the next year (usually somewhat blackened).
Piptoporus betulinus is apparently edible when young, but it is quite a tough and corky mushroom,
and I can't imagine the texture would make a pleasant eating experience.
However, the fungus does have antibiotic and styptic properties--and the Tyrolean Ice Man Ötzi
was carrying it around for some reason.

Lichens are symbiotic associations of a fungus (the mycobiont) with a photosynthetic partner (the photobiont also known as the phycobiont) that can produce food for the lichen from sunlight. The photobiont is usually either a green alga or cyanobacterium. A few lichens are known to contain yellow-green algae or, in one case, a brown alga. Some lichens contain both green algae and cyanobacteria as photobionts; in these cases, the cyanobacteria symbiont component may specialize in fixing atmospheric nitrogen for metabolic use.

Lichens must compete with plants for access to sunlight, but because of their small size and slow growth, they thrive in places where higher plants have difficulty growing.
A major ecophysiological advantage of lichens is that they are poikilohydric (poikilo- variable, hydric- relating to water), meaning that though they have little control over the status of their hydration, they can tolerate irregular and extended periods of severe desiccation. Like some mosses, liverworts, ferns, and a few "resurrection plants", upon desiccation, lichens enter a metabolic suspension or stasis (known as cryptobiosis) in which the cells of the lichen symbionts are dehydrated to a degree that halts most biochemical activity. In this cryptobiotic state, lichens can survive wider extremes of temperature, radiation and drought in the harsh environments they often inhabit.
Lichens do not have roots and do not need to tap continuous reservoirs of water like most higher plants, thus they can grow in locations impossible for most plants, such as bare rock, sterile soil or sand, and various artificial structures such as walls, roofs and monuments. Many lichens also grow as epiphytes (epi- on the surface, phyte- plant) on other plants, particularly on the trunks and branches of trees.

When growing on other plants, lichens are not parasites; they do not consume any part of the plant nor poison it.

In Mitteleuropa kommen davon etwa 2.000 vor. Der Anteil endemischer Arten ist bei Flechten viel niedriger als bei Blütenpflanzen. Flechten werden immer nach dem Pilz benannt, der die Flechte bildet, da es meist dieser ist, der ihr die Form und Struktur gibt. Während mehrere Photobionten in einer Flechte vorhanden sein können, findet man immer nur eine Pilzart. Flechten werden daher den Pilzen (Fungi) zugerechnet, unter denen sie als eigene Lebensform eine Sonderstellung einnehmen; sie sind also keine Pflanzen.
